Luther Rose
This is the “Luther Rose” or “Luther Seal,” the most enduring symbol of the Lutheran Reformation. Luther himself designed it to represent his theology. By the 1520’s this seal began to appear on the title page of Luther’s works. Luther explained that the red heart with a black cross at the center should remind us that the righteous live by faith in the Crucified One. The heart rests in a white rose, showing that faith gives joy, comfort, and peace. The rose is white, not red, because white is the color of the heavenly spirits and angels. The white rose stands in a field of blue, the color of heaven, to show that joy in the Spirit and in faith in this life is only the beginning of future heavenly joy. Surrounding the sky-blue field is a gold ring, to show that happiness and joy in heaven has no end but lasts forever, just as gold is the most noble and precious metal.
Martin Luther (November 10, 1483 – February 18, 1546) was a German monk who became the father of the Protestant/Lutheran Reformation. Martin Luther criticized aspects of the Catholic Church and the concept of Papal infallibility. In particular, he believed that it was the Bible alone – and not priests or the Church – which had legitimacy for interpreting the word of Christ. Martin Luther also translated the Bible into German, making it more accessible to the general public. Luther said: “We believe that the very beginning and end of salvation, and the sum of Christianity, consists of faith in Christ, who by His blood alone, and not by any works of ours, has put away sin, and destroyed the power of death.”
